The Star Inn
East Yorkshire, UK
A quick look at the project
Community Engagement
We presented ideas to the locals to determine what the village needed, or wanted to see from the building.
Reworking What’s There
Due to the prominence of the building in the village centre we ensured to keep the outside unchanged.
Multiple Uses
As well as retaining the pub, we created a cafe space, village shop & 3 apartments, as well as managers accommodation.
Sustainable Design
Cycle parking was added in to the proposal to encourage locals to visit the building via bike, instead of cars.
Adapting to keep on going.
Due to changing times this enormous village pub and restaurant had become unviable as a commercial business, with much more floorspace than its secluded location could ever justify. Working with planning consultants Benson Planning Studio we generated ideas for its future and consulted the local village, making sure that everyone had a say.
Client Brief.
We were approached to remodel the interior of this beautiful old building in the heart of an East Yorkshire village, to generate enough income to finance its upkeep moving forward.
Main Challenges.
Working within the framework of the existing walls, and ensuring minimal changes to the exterior we had to cleverly fit the required spaces into what was already there.
Outcome.
The resulting design has retained the village pub with the same street-scene appearance, and yet managed to give the village a shop unit, cafe and three new apartments without the need to extend the footprint.
