The design incorporates the dwelling being brought up to a highly insulated standard to make it comfortable and energy efficient.
Old property, new identity.
Originally one large country house on a hill this building has witnessed a multitude of modifications throughout the years, concluding in the main house being split into two highly ornamented grand dwellings, and the former servants quarters becoming the house that our clients bought. Working with the clients in a collaborative way we are transforming it into a stunning home through a series of phased interventions.
Client Brief.
Our client spotted the underlying potential in this beautiful yet unloved building and tasked us with reimagining it as a home fit for their growing family, and for modern living. We were entrusted to reimagine the internal layout, and also design a series of subtle extensions which respectfully juxtapose the existing aesthetic, whilst referencing aspects through a continued pattern language.
Main Challenges.
Built originally as utilitarian additions to the adjacent manor house, and then partially converted to a dwelling in a piecemeal approach the dwelling did not function as a family home nor did it exploit the magnificent views which surround it. The main entrance was via the back doors, making it still feel like part of next-doors property. It was in major need of a new identity.
To address this we designed the proposed layout around reinstating the grandeur with a generous and formal front entrance and vestibule, and a triple-height circulation space to make use of the impressive storey heights.
Outcome.
The proposed design has not only given the dwelling the grand status that its rich heritage deserves, but has also unlocked exciting and playful spaces within, which lead out into contrasting extensions designed to take advantage of the beautiful garden and its views beyond.
